The Power of Saying It Aloud
It’s amazing how powerful it is to say stuff out loud. The other day I was in my van on my way to physical therapy (I had back surgery recently. No worries though; recovery has been absolutely amazing.) and I decided to turn on the radio. 101.1 KLRC…what a wonderful station…the only one I listen to. The only one worth listening to. Instead of listening, however, I decided to sing along also. A good song came on, and I just got into it. I turned it up more, and another good song came on. I sang and sang and sang…by the time I got to the hospital, something amazing had happened. I didn’t want to leave. My heart rate was racing, and adrenaline raged throughout my body. I wanted to sing. I wanted to dance. I was smiling. Big smile, too. I took a moment to just soak it all in, close my eyes, lean my head back, and praise God. The van was off, and I sang my way into the hospital with a spring in my step. I checked in and sat down, opening my Bible to read as I waited for the therapist to call me. I wonder what the lady next to me thought of my facial expressions and cheerful heart. She looked like she had had her share of adversary and twice over…I can only hope that I planted a seed of joy.
None of this would have ever happened to me–I would never have had such an encounter–if it was not for my out-loud singing on the way there. Had I chosen to not do that, there’s no way I would have ended up so worshipful.
Last year a motivational speaker visited Colcord Schools. He gave everyone a string and paperclip. He had us hold the string with the paperclip on the very end and just hold it there and then say aloud, “Back and forth. Back and forth. Back and forth…” What do you think happened to the string and paperclip? Try it and see. Really. It’s very cool. We then tried it with ”counterclockwise” and “front to back.” The speaker claimed that the power of words is strong enough to move the little microscopic nerves in your fingers. Imagine what power words would have if more boldness and volume was put into your speech.
Have you ever had trouble opening a bag of chips or a jar of peanut butter? When you have tried to open it and have continually failed, what do you do? I yell “OPEN!!” and guess what? It usually does. I don’t know if there’s something special with words, or if a certain point of stubborn ambition is reached to the point of saying something aloud as an expression and having actions that result also from that ambition, but there’s definitely something there.
Right now I am listening to some people argue. Words are powerful, no doubt. They can be used for very good things, but they can also be used for bad things. It’s your choice on how you will use them.
I challenge you; ponder and dwell on this. Say stuff to yourself throughout the day and see what results. When you are getting dressed, say to yourself, “Look good today.” And you might just. When you are down, pump yourself up and say aloud, “You can do it.” When you are tempted, say to Satan, “You have no power over me.” Say it outloud; this is extremely important! Go ahead; try it. I dare you. Let me know how it goes.
